Ubisoft reconfirmed today that a new Ghost Recon is pegged for release before the end of February 2010. The game is still being referred to as Ghost Recon 4 in official documentation, rather than GRAW 3 and we're expecting to hear more about the latest in the venerable series of Clancy shooters at E3 in early June.
Obviously, the Clancy focus in recent years has been the wildly popular Rainbow Six Vegas series, but with large scale modern conflict increasingly the go-to for shooter fans, it's clear that Ubi is keen on a return to the battlefield.
What's most interesting is the numeration, there has never officially been a 'Ghost Recon 3' released, which suggests that Ubisoft still classifies the futuristic GRAW as the third in the series and its sequel as a spinoff. That leads us to speculate that Ghost Recon 4 may return to a more contemporary setting, with less of an emphasis on high tech gadgetry and rarely used weaponry and more on the kind of operations that real soldiers embark upon.

Here are the top five things we want to see in the game:
1 A Proper Cover Button The cover system in the GRAW games was slightly awkward and unpredictable, and Ubisoft would do well to borrow the slick cover system from the Rainbow Six Vegas games to save us from getting stuck to walls and shot to bits.
2 A New Setting While Mexico appears to be about to descend into the apocalypse in real life at the moment, a change of scenery for the Ghosts would be extremely welcome after two consecutive games based in the country. Perhaps the tropical climes found in the old Island Thunder add-on might be ripe for a revisit?
3 Customisable Kit One of the things that kept us playing Vegas 2 was the opportunity to customise our kit, put our faces on the models and, when we earned truly obscene amounts of XP, run around in pink camouflage so that everyone knew how awesome we were. Ghost Recon needs a similar system, where you can choose not just weaponry, but kit that suits your own personality.
4 Full campaign co-op Okay, you've had enough time with the console now, it's time for full campaign co-op. The standard clean out co-op missions are fun, but are always self contained and lacking in the spectacular fireworks of the main mission. More than any other modern combat game, Ghost Recon is about tactics and teamwork, and we want to be able to execute them with our mates.
Ghost Recon 4 is due before February 2010.
5 Voice control Ubisoft has all but perfected voice recognition in EndWar and the feature made an appearance in HAWX as well. Ghost Recon 4 is an opportunity to absolutely nail the system in a single player squad based shooter. If the developer can fit a system that doesn't result in your AI squadmates shambling around like a Sunday League football team, we'll finally be happy to play the game alone.
