Splatterhouse

Sign up for the zombie blood drive!
We finally got to see an early version of the arcade remake in action, and rest assured, gore lovers, it appears to be staying true to the spirit of its over-the-top predecessor. And by that we mean there's blood - buckets and buckets of blood.

Until last month, the game was in the hands of Californian developer BottleRocket Entertainment.

However, Publisher Namco decided to part ways with the company, taking what was done so far and handing it over to the Afro Samurai team. That's not necessarily a bad thing because Afro was certainly very inventive when it comes to slicing and dicing through enemies. It's something Splatterhouse needs to excel at, given that splattering is what this game's about.

Reprising the role of college boy Rick Taylor, whose girlfriend is kidnapped inside West Manor during a visit to the evil scientist's mansion, you'll don the mask that imbues you with Hulk-like strength and a Wolverine-ish healing ability.

Not only will your muscle tissue regrow after you take damage, we even witnessed Rick pick up his own severed arm with his newly sprouted one and beat zombies with it.

We also got to see the core combat at work. Tearing up enemies - thanks to the unique fatality-like 'Splatter Kills' - yields 'Necro,' the game's green currency used to unlock new attacks and SKs.

In addition to standard punches and what the team jokingly refers to as "Sparta kicks" (as in the "This... is... SPARTA!" scene from 300), Rick can also wield stray objects just like in the classic version. That means cinder blocks, the trusty ol' 2x4, and - yes! - chainsaws are at your disposal.

Throw in a sarcastic voice within the mask that has hilarious conversations with Rick - and the near-promise that the original game will be included somehow (probably as an unlockable) - and the new Splatterhouse looks to be striking the right balance between reverence and 21st-century newness.
