The Incredible Hulk

Hulk smash any expectations of decent movie tie-in game! Rargggh!
Who would have thought that Marvel's dark horse would produce the greatest cinematic tie-in ever - a perfect blend of Ninja Gaiden's button-bashing action and Assassin's Creed rooftop-leaping freedom?

If only that was the case. But now that we've got your attention, stick around for the next 300 words and we'll try and make this review of a rehash of every single sandbox superhero title in existence as painless as possible.

So why so bad? Well, firstly The Incredible Hulk takes the exact blueprint of Spider-Man 3 - using an artistic interpretation of New York city as a sandbox environment - and lets you roam around freely. Waypoints are dotted around the area if you want to activate storyline-specific events or mini-games. If you don't, well, there are army forces and invading secret organisations to tackle.

The similarities don't stop there. While the Hulk and his surrounding environment are better looking than Marvel's other iconic superhero, the draw distance is frankly appalling. Climb to the top of a skyscraper and the city beneath you is a mass of featureless grey boxes.

Everybody knows the Xbox 360 can do better, and yet we're back to Superman Returns depths of travesty here.

Happily the superhuman combat is more impressive, and a relatively quick upgrade system (linked to the amount of destruction you cause) makes the first few hours interesting.

Once that's past, however, you're prone to wrestle with - rather than forgive - the lack of precision in the Hulk's movements. Huge leaps are fine to get between street-wide rooftops, but they're not so good when you're trying to land on a soldier's head.

Fans will like the nods to the Marvel Universe - the Daily Bugle, Baxter Building and Iron Man all make an appearance - but even with the bonus factor of unlockable Hulk outfits, the enjoyment is just spread too thin over the whole game.

This comes a close second behind Spider-Man 3 in the rankings for the most average superhero tie-in. Seriously, there's nothing Incredible about this.

  Didn't we do this in Spider-Man 3?
