MS: Gearbox is NOT working on a Halo game

Waypoint Twitter account shoots down recent rumours
A post to one of Microsoft's Twitter feeds has shot down recent rumours that Gearbox is working on a new Halo game.

The post to the new Halo Waypoint account reads "For the record, Gearbox is NOT working on a Halo title for Microsoft."

This follows an interview with Gearbox studio head Randy Pitchford earlier this week in which he very carefully didn't deny the rumour - which has been circulating for some time.

Having been told "it's no secret that we have some other things in development," Eurogamer TV asked "Is one of those Halo?"

"Haha! We're not going to talk about anything," came the response, which naturally got tongues (well, fingers) waggling online. Rather looks like somebody at Microsoft got bored of hearing about it.

Regardless, Bungie has stated that it's not going to do another Halo title after next year's Halo Reach, which means Microsoft will have to find someone to continue what's still the most important Xbox franchise. As one of a dwindling number of independent studios, Gearbox wasn't a bad choice - so who does that leave? Epic? Crytek? Or will there be a new studio created for the purpose, like Crackdown 2 creators Ruffian Games?
