An astute IGN reader has leaked a number of impressive concept artworks and story details from Bungie's newest venture, Destiny (via CVG). They reveal a distinct Halo-vibe with an interesting fantasy twist. The much speculated-upon sci-fi action series is set to be published by Activision as a timed Xbox 720 exclusive, and if the premise is anything to go by, it should be an epic saga.
The leaked document includes several vivid concept images detailing the world, its inhabitants and some vehicles. Bungie has confirmed their legitimacy, and provided us with an image of their own. "Go ahead," reads a note on the developer's site. "Take a peek. It's alright. We weren't quite ready, but we will be soon, and we can't wait to finally show you what we've really been up to."
According to the document, Destiny takes place in Earth's distant future, with much of human civilization in ruins/being shot at by space aliens. "A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon," reads one paragraph. "No one knows where it came from or what it's here for, but only that it's our protector."
Players fill the boots of "young 'knights' tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters (strange alien races) and - eventually - overcoming it."
The game itself is said to be "fun and accessible" and "social at its core". In the words of Bungie co-founder Jason Jones, Destiny "is designed for your inner seven year old. We want to make it feel like a mythic adventure."
According to an older rumour, Destiny is "quite like Halo" and features a large, MMO-ish world with a day-night cycle. Players are able to customise their weapons and armour. As an anonymous DemonWare employee puts it, the game "actually brought back a sense of exploration I recall from playing [Elite] many years ago, although there was no opportunity to shoot aliens in the face in Elite."
