All you need to know about Call of Duty 5!

The weapons, the co-op, the setting, the multiplayer, the developers...

So here it is folks, everything you need to know about Call of Duty 5 and a lot more besides.

There have been several questions from fans about this game. Who is developing it? Where will it be set? What's going to happen with the multiplayer? What if it turns out like Call of Duty 3?

Thanks to a world exclusive preview in the latest issue of OXM, we can now answer those questions for you, with the following features making up the essential points about the game...

  • It is being developed by Treyarch - Confirmation that it will, in fact, be Treyarch handling it as most expected.
  • It will be set in World War II - Following Call of Duty 4, the series will be returning to World War II and in particular, the battle of the Pacific between America and Japan. European assaults will also feature, such as the Russians advancing on Berlin.
  • It will be called Call of Duty: World at War - Note that it will NOT be known as Call of Duty 5, as the series is now doing away with numbers, a la Tony Hawk.
  • It will be on a two-year cycle - This means Treyarch has had more time to develop Call of Duty: World at War. This was a problem that blighted Call of Duty 3, which was completed in 11 months while the team was also trying to create a separate Call of Duty game for last-gen consoles.
  • Multiplayer is left intact - Treyarch will be adding to Call of Duty 4's popular multiplayer rather than taking away, with the main addition being new vehicles. Perks will still be there along with a new 'leader' system, that gives you extra perks when sticking close to the team's leader.
  • It will use the Call of Duty 4 engine - Good news for those who loved Call of Duty 4's fluid shooting action is that by using the same engine, this should feel largely the same. The biggest difference between the two are the environments are now more destructible.
  • Japanese tactics! - The main new gameplay advance for the series is the unusually aggressive tactics of the Japanese as they set ambushes, hide in trees, flank fearlessly, hide in the ground... creative director Rich Farrelly says World at War has more in common with survival horror than war movies.
  • Four player co-op - Call of Duty: World at War will have split screen for two players, online co-op for four players!
  • New weapons - The main new addition being the flamethrower, allowing you to set fire to grass and trees, flushing out Japanese soldiers waiting to ambush you.

Which new feature are you most excited about in Call of Duty: World at War?

  1. Oh my God. Hasn't World War Two been milked now. I want to see an FPS set in a different war, possibly the Gulf, Korea or maybe Bosnia. World War Two games are just a huge Cliché nowadays. I mean the story of WWII has pretty much been told now. Let's move on. I thought COD4 was a turning point in the series. Obviously I thought wrong. That's why I'm sticking to FPS's such as Half Life that are actually original and exciting. Not just more of the same.

  2. I would have preferd to keep it modern for the weapons but no point complainin now it aint gonna change anythin. I like the multiplayer campaign though and the multiplayer ranking system will be like cod4 and maybe even more improved and thats good. Just hope they spread the achievements across multiplayer this time, be easier to get the veteran achievements with 4 people if they put them in though.

  3. FLAMETHROWER? thats sweeet

  4. I must say I am quite disappointed with the return back to WWII. As said before, the story has been told to death and the developers seem to be running back to what's safe for them, which seems unfair for us.

How about Call of Duty: WWI? WWI was a much more horrific and brutal war than the second and would make an excellent game.

Or how about Call of Duty: Vietnam? Not the first time a Vietnam game has been made true, but I'd like to see how Treyarch would handle that war. Plus, I think playing multiplayer in Vietnam would be an immense gaming experience!

  5. Although I'm a little disappointed by the return to WW2 for the setting, rather than a more modern setting, the addition of 4 player Co-Op has me quite excited, I love playing through a game with 3 other mates (I don't tend to play well with randoms) and sharing the experience of the campaign story with them!

Ok, so we sound like complete geeks when we get to the pub but it's all good!

  6. WW2, good. A proper war that was.

Now all I want is 64 people multiplayer to make it feel like a proper battle and we're there.

  7. Damn, I was really hoping that they would stick with the modern world, I was really enjoying the new weaponry and feel of the whole thing, i'm seriously getting tired of old war shooters :(

  8. im quite annoyed about call of duty going back to world war 2 i think it was a bad move, and im not too sure about the whole multiplayer thing with vehicles, i mean call of duty maps were fantastic but it seems to be going in the direction of the battlefield games, i love the battlefield games but i dont think call of duty should try competing in that way, i think they should have gone the other way and kept it modern or maybe slightly in the future, but not as far as frontlines, its a thin line and i guess as the post above says, going back to whats safe and i feel that its cheating us out of a game in a way cus lets face it world war 2 games have been around forever, remember wolfenstein, first shooter? that was a world war 2 game, all the medal of honour games, and if i remember didnt they already do a pacific war? vietnam would have been a good idea i suppose, i just hope they dont mess it up like they did with call of duty 3

please treyarch dont do it again

  9. Hooray...Call of Duty 4, not set in WW2, this is awesome...more of the same please...uh..oh...wait...damn we're back to WW2; I think the old cow is out of milk by now dontcha think?

  10. I guess we're all gunna have to wait and hope they make it as addictive in the multiplayer as COD4 and that this time maybe we will be rewarded for sticking with the tired WW2 series of games with maybe some free content when it becomes available instead of having to shell out even more money just to add to their franchise of millions of sales etc.
Hope its all worth the fuss and Ill see you all online when it comes out and starts to infect us.

The gulf war? hahah some game that would be.

  12. At first i thought the same thing as most:oh no WW2 again.Upon reading the preview in this months mag i was pleasantly surprised at how this game is going, especially after the so so nature of COD3,bearing in mind that they rushed that game out in 11 months(this time out it's a full 2yr dev cycle).

Firstly COD5 is set in the pacific which will make a refreshing change from the well trodden paths of France,Germany etc,co-op mode will be great for getting past those difficult sections on veteran difficulty and most of all i'm looking forward to spraying flamethrowers down tunnel entrances too toast your enemies i quote from the preview "the cacophany of screams that follows is truly horrible, and this scene is made more shocking as you watch your enemies skin melt off".How could you not be slightly intrigued by that?COD is going dark and i like the sound of it.

I agree that WW2 maybe getting tiresome now but this sounds different to the other offerings and i think it wholly deserves a chance, although true COD fans like myself will dive in regardless its the new gamers to the series who only know COD4 who need to be convinced,i am and i can't wait.

  13. wish it would of gone past modern warfare to future warfare could of been a bit more intresting than wwii

  14. Maybe they should do the iraq war that would take some of the heat off GTA and we could have some fresh controversy everyone loves controversy

  15. Maybe they should do the iraq war that would take some of the heat off GTA and we could have some fresh controversy everyone loves controversy

says the guy named after a virtual drunken irsh character from a game that has more controversy tan george bush

  16. i think they should've set it in the future. not too far but like 20 years. then they could just have fun making up a war that doesnt exist. they could have so much more freedom in making it than doing something that everbody already knows about. :D

  17. just like the guy above i was a it bummed out at it being back in ww2 as you could see from my comment, BUT i read the review and it sounds sinister, i like it. i didnt find COD4 too bad on veteran, after playing it through twice and getting all the achievements i was a bit like well that wasnt too bad now was it, although the bonus mission was a pain in the arse and took me a good 50 goes :P but yeh im all for COD:waw but it just sounds really really good, cant say i didnt enjoy the preview, shame that there wasnt the slightest clue as to when its out, and hopefully, the multiplayer will be better, because i could see myself going back to modern warfare. does anyone feel weird saying they'd go back to modern warfare? surely its something they should have left till after this one? stupid treyarch and there stupid late developments :p

  18. i want laser scopes and flashbangs, not muskets and sandbags

  19. not vehicles!!

imagine if there was a more recent war on the same scale as WW2 (i.e WW3), then you could play something other than the same WW2 based fps again and again, it seems like Treyarch has no imagination... even their name some how reminds me of trench.

next year should be promising though...

(just so you know im not suggesting there should be a massive war were millions die horrific deaths with imaginative new weapons so we have a decent new type of computer game. COD4 did it very well by itself. besides the 3rd ones are never very good anyway...)

  20. Not another WWII game. Look to the future already and stay with this generation of gamers. COD WWII would be something my grandfather would want to play. Same ole' song and dance again. The market is flooded with those types of games. Stay with the Modern Warfare. Heck have us track down Al Qaeda or something. I know I wouldn't mine putting my 50 cal sniper cross hairs on Osama bin Laden. You might as well go caveman version instead of WWII. But being able to drive vehicles while your co-op friends shoot from inside would be cool.

  21. I too wish that we had other wars covered. Like the Bosnian war, or the Iraq war, or even do what they did in COD4 and do a made up war a few years into the future.

But this actually sounds fairly interesting. And as an avid COD fan (I've had all the proper games except COD3) I'll get this.

  22. i dont think this is gonna b any gd cause its in world war 2 the weapons arent as gd as the other call of duty to be honest i might not get im dont sure yet :?

  23. i dont think this is gonna b any gd cause its in world war 2 the weapons arent as gd as the other call of duty to be honest i might not get im dont sure yet :?

true, besides unless they make this WWII game stand out im not buying another call of duty untill they stop doing f**kin' world war 2,sorry about the language, but get some imagination treyarch, make a future war with cool futuristic and hot cybeernetic chicks, and mini laser blades(oh wait its called too human)or just make a modern one AGAIN,i still wanan see whether captain price lived or died, anyway if u like world war 2,then when it comes out get iit, everyone else by modern warfare and hope for another modern or a diffrent non world war 2 one

  24. i pleased to hear that they are using the same engine as call of duty 4 but i am dissapoited to hear that its world war 2 again i am sick to death of ww2 titles now they should of just stuck to mordern warfare

  25. omg, not world war 2 again.......let it die. they should be moving on to vietnam, falkirk, or mabye even futuristic war! that would be a good oppurtunity for the developers to use a little thing called "imagination"

  26. they should be moving on to vietnam, falkirk..

Falkirk ? There was a war there ?

Man I never heard about that one ...

  27. omg, not world war 2 again.......let it die. they should be moving on to vietnam, falkirk, or mabye even futuristic war! that would be a good oppurtunity for the developers to use a little thing called "imagination"

i agree, cant we once have a war that isnt world war 2 or 1,have another modern war,a modern war,the feature that made call of duty 4 stand out from all other fps ive played, still this call of duty might be enough to make us like world war 2,at least untill we finish the campaign learn everything about it and become a master of it online,in which well be bribing and blackmailing treyarch and infinity ward to make another *sigh*

  28. Unless you want it to be call of duty, Wallace's war I think you mean Falklands, but either of those would be too British and not leave much room for other people.

We do need to move on from WW2, Vietnam being the most obvious one. I think Korea would be too similar to WW2 Pacific, only the air power had changed in that war. WW1 would involve a lot of waiting around to die. First Gulf war would be a computer game about looking at computer screens, everything had already finished by the time the troops got there.

I guess the stongest point here is that they've had two years to work on it and four player co-op. The survival horror part with banzai charges could go two ways, either OH MY GOD A JAP, WHERE DID HE COME FROM. Or it could go, bang, got one, bang got another one oh no I've died because i fell asleep.

  29. Just on a side note though, I think I've noticed one of the new perks already or a standard mutliplayer feature, it looks like your going to be able to climb up and hide in trees and wait for the enemy. Like the multiplayer is going to focus on surpruse ambush, or maybe that'll just be a feature of the Japanese.

My one main concern is that the Japanese had inferior weaponry to the Americans for close quarter combat. Only a bolt actions rifle and a type 42 machine gun. They didn't have and sub-machine guns, though I think they had a weapon similar to the Bren Gun.

But the biggest thing Treayarch messed up on in COD3 was that well a) the maps were to glitchy but than can be fixed with time, but mainly the weapons WERE inbalanced. The Garand better than the KAr, the BAR better than the MP44 and the thompson better than the MP40. That's why I really hated treyarch, everyone always wanted to be American. Infinity Ward always got the right balance.

    BTW COD3 OXM 9/10, WHY?

  30. What are you all on about call of duty 5 in world war 2 is really good especially if they keep to call of duty 4 structure and multiplayer and if there doing online co-op and by the way all the guns that were created in world war 2 are the basis for our modern weps, and by the way as long as they bring out the sniper that was in saving privet ryan i really dont care that its not set in modern day because if its basis on call of duty 4 am going to clap and say well done producers!!!!!. also for the record another game is doing it in ww1 so stop wining and buy that!

  31. forget what i said about privet ryan abit slow when i wrote that but everything else i said is true and u should lisen to it because the producers made a good move!

  32. Well my belief is that the Second World War should be treated with more respect. Back in my day, when I was a young lad, the soldiers would come back from fighting in the war and be treated as heroes, not moaned at because the WWII storey's been milked.

You are all discraceful and if you don't like it that much then you should just send your xbox 360 to a charity, and they certainly won't moan if you give them Call of Duty 5.

So why don't you all go and see an WWII veteran and apolagize for your total and uter lack of respect.

  33. i personally feel as if treyarch should DELETE all COD5 data they have saved and start from scratch. would you honestly mind waiting a couple mopre years for another great modern warfare shooter? i know i would like that to happen rather than have ww2 thrusted into my face again
