New Mass Effect 3 trailer kills kids off-camera

Another kick in the taboos from BioWare

Have you yet to play the Mass Effect 3 demo? Shame - you're missing out on all the hot child-murdering action. Fortunately, BioWare has released a new CGI trailer in which yet another angelic pre-teen bites it at the hands of dose dastardly Weaper wascals.

It's an impressive trailer, but the continuing reliance on Implied Kiddy Death as an emotional crutch is a bit annoying. Enough, BioWare, we get it. Reapers are evil. The whole destroying-cities bit was a dead giveaway.

Mass Effect 3 launches on 9th March in the UK. Check out our Mass Effect 3 hub for additional close encounters of the third kind.

  1. And the music is from trailer gurus Two Steps From Hell. Honestly, download a couple of their albums and see if you can match their music to Hollywood blockbuster trailers and games - it appears everywhere!

  2. im seriously so excited i could cry!!!

  3. I'm going to hand my head in shame and admit that I was wrong!

I am a massive fan of Horde mode on Gears of War and have yet to find a game that matches this mode; Mass Effect 3's multiplayer mode comes damn close. Myself and two of my friends have played it quite extensively, on what is undoubtedly a much smaller version of what is to come, and have found it to be very good indeed, if a little unforgiving. So, I was one of those that slated the inclusion of multiplayer, and I am now going to have to admit to saying that it's a superb addition.

However, I still have concerns. Firstly, and most importantly, will the single player campaign be reduced in length to accomodate the multiplayer? Secondly, the fact that the multiplayer stats will affect the campaign conclusion, means that I will have to play the multiplayer first, and that's not something I ever do; I always finish the campaign before occasionally venturing into the multiplayer mode. So, whilst I am dying to get involved in the single player game, I will have to change the habit of a (long!) gaming life time and play the mulitplayer first.

    Damn but I torn!

  4. To be fair, they're only implying that the kid is dead. Those who have played Mass Effect know that rather than killing humans, many are turned into soulless "husks". In ME3, there may be a way to bring them back. I'm not saying there is, I'm just saying that when it comes to Sci-fi, unless you see a dead body, there's never a guarantee for anything. Hell, they killed Shepard off camera are the beginning of ME2 and he's still around.

They say it has had no effect as they brought in another team to increase the workforce, but who knows until it is released, they say it has 40,000 lines, more than both of the first two games separately, and 82 minutes of cutscenes - not conversations - cutscenes!

You are 100% able to get the best ending (galaxy at war being highest rating or whatever) without touching the mp so you can do sp without worrying, but if you've killed characters by accident (or on purpose) or made odd decisions - did you save the genophage data? no? are the krogans going to be happy? then the mp may help skim over that.

  6. Thay should make a film !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Thay should make a film !!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are! An anime as well.

  8. any word on the mass effect anime, havnt heard a peep about it since it was announced, hoping its a full feature and not a buch of short films.
read in an interview with the Doctors that the single player is definatly longer than Me2, hopefully the eextra time is not including mining for resources

Near the bottom of this interview, they say it's longer than Mass Effect 2 so no worries there if there's a small amount of filler :)

  10. *Clicks heels together* I wish I had Mass Effect 3, I wish I had Mass Effect 3.

  11. does anyone know how the character system is going to work, meaning, will only the characters i have that survived ME2 only be featured in ME3? i ,lost Miranda and the had a great body, want her back for the eye candy. or does Cerberus come in and rebuilds them all for you to choose as and when you please for ME3? :|

    Sweeeeet !!!!

  13. They'll be dead, like how if your shepard dies in ME2 he is canonically dead, they'll have generic characters replacing them if they have strong plot points - like wrex.

Wait, if Shepard and the whole crew died in ME2 the game'll still continue!?

No that's the end for you if that happens. You can't use the save in ME3.

Well said, I started smiling at around 0:52... Sky and the BBC use their tracks regularly, the last two season trailers for Doctor Who used "Destiny of Mankind" and "Tristan" respectively.

Seriously people, download "Invincible" and "Archangel" from iTunes, some classic tracks on there you will have heard before. Or just search for "Two Steps from Hell" on Youtube...

Superb ME3 trailer, by the way. Watching MaleShep and Ashley striding forward with their weapons... hell, I'm gonna do a John Shepard playthrough and put those two together at some point...

  17. Undoubtedly the most dramatic and obviously Hollywood-esque trailer I've seen. Really wish the final game looked like that but ah well.

To be honest, there is no need to ramp up my excitement at this point, and they are going a bit far with the child-icide...

  18. it just makes a pont thay have come to kill evey thing no one is speared

  19. Oh, also, I spy the (or many) Makos - woop!

  20. No xbox or TV for me tonight, i will likely be found sat watching this trailer on repeat... Can't. Stop. Watching.

  21. Not seen it myself, don't want to now Sid, thanks! :D

  22. Not seen it myself, don't want to now Sid, thanks! :D

Hmm... Now what one word can i use to describe it? How about AWESOME!!! Spoiler free too (Bargain!)

Seriously one of the best game trailers i've watched, suppose that helps if you're a self-confessed ME addict though! Wow, the hype machine has bitten me on the arse big time!

  23. Wow, the hype machine has bitten me on the arse big time!

You want some lotion for that?

But yes, I agree, it is very very cool.

  24. I bitched about the kid thing in the demo being for morons, and now they've released a trailer featuring more of the same. It's like Dead Space 2 all over again. I won't be reading any more articles or watching any trailers for ME3, because all this hype is making me sick of the sight of ME3 before the game is even out.

  25. Don't know if you kids are aware but the best just got better! The extended version is available for your perusal now! Doesn't add a lot, but just a bit newer and shinier!

  26. I spot the first 'Awesome' of the ME3 campaign hysteriaathon and claim my five pounds...although the word should really be spelled 'OSSOM' because that's all I hear the Yanks say in describing something thrilling and well made and exciting and and and and 'awesome'.
Miranda is dead to me, there will be more room on my 50 inch telly now for some other female arse. That female krogan for instance, moved like a female but ALL Krogan!
Hurry up and arrive please ME3...with Skyrim and this game I can at least survive until the Autumn (not Fall, or Ossom Fall) when Bioshock Infinite hits the shelves.
Wishing my life away, wishing my life away......he drinks a whisky drink, he drinks a cider drink. He sings the songs that re....time for a cold shower.

  27. I'm looking at this trailer and wondering if BioWare have lost that rare touch of storytelling subtlety. If they throw all the spectacle away in the big opening to Mass Effect 3, I'll be very annoyed.

Mass Effect 2 was such a great experience because we didn't know anything about the Collectors or Reapers and didn't fully appreciate their threat levels until much later on in the game, usually through conversations with Mordin, who's become an all-time favourite character of mine ever since I first heard his speach on "limitations".

So my question for fellow ME veterans is: Has Mass Effect 3 become just a big action shooter game with little or no attention paid to the little things that made us fall in love with the story in the first instance?

  28. So my question for fellow ME veterans is: Has Mass Effect 3 become just a big action shooter game with little or no attention paid to the little things that made us fall in love with the story in the first instance?

Very difficult question to answer at this point since no one (other than Matt Lees) can say they have played it, but the scale is undoubtedly bigger, with a bigger character roster so there's undoubtedly less intimacy.

I think how successful the Citadel is in ME3 will be a good indicator of how much attention to detail has been paid, since this was something a lot of fans of ME1 commented on in ME2.

I should think the Citadel will play a massive role in this last part of the trilogy.

In Mass Effect, the Citadel was geared to making the player understand the function of galactic community and the fact that humanity was a somewhat recent addition to the masses. This didn't really need stating again in ME2 and, given that the majority of the game was taking place outside Citadel Space, it made sense to trim it down.

The Citadel in Mass Effect 3 could very well represent the turning point of the war against the "Reapers". At the beginning of previous 'harvests' throughout galactic history it was always the first thing to go, but now it looks likely to be the rallying point for a coordinated resistance from all corners of advanced galactic life. This is only speculation, of course.

But what about the 'implied knowledge' of the Mass Effect universe that made hunting through conversation trees so compelling? That's the kind of detail I'd like to see make a return in Mass Effect 3.

It's all getting a bit Babylon 5 round here

It's good, one of my favorites in fact, but does take a while to get going. The hardest part is sitting through the REALLY bad acting by some people in the first season. But what you end up with a beautifully realised space opera about an ancient race returning to wipe everyone out and the lone human space station that has to break away from Earth in order to organise the warring races of the galaxy into a force that can fight them. It's biggest strength is that small scenes or even singles lines of dialogue would return two or three years later to massively impact the story in ways you never foresaw.

In all Mass Effect probably has more in common with B5 than with Star Wars or Trek.

I am a lesser geek, mighty sir, I can only bow to your superior geek knowledge! I may just have to look that TV series up.

If you're into space opera you might want to buy one of Iain M. Banks' "Culture" novels and have a read (if you're not a fan already). Some of what the Involved races in his universe can do make the Reaper tech in Mass Effect look unsophisticated by comparison.

Love Ian M. Banks! Use of Weapons is a masterpiece of slow reveal plotting.

Give Babylon 5 a go. As I said it needs patience at the beginning since they had such a small budget (the FX budget was less than for Friends) that they hired mostly first time actors and eastern Europeans, so some of the first season is a bit wooden as everyone either learnt to act or learnt to speak. The low budget did make it one of the first shows to experiment with CG modelling though which still looks pretty good twenty years later.

Use of Weapons is definitely one of my all-time favourite novels. Seriously brutal stuff and brilliantly written with an intriguing chapter structure (I gather Banks made the book much more complex and lengthy to begin with and then abandoned it, but later was persuaded to finish it).

Even though it's not a Culture novel, I think Against A Dark Background comes close to Use of Weapons in terms of storytelling and a main character's inability to find refuge from themselves. I wonder what would happen if you fired a Lazy Gun at a Reaper?

I'm looking up series of Babylon 5 when I finish work.

  36. Season 1 is about a fiver on Amazon, and the reviews pretty much sum it up. Let me know how you get on with it.

I'm off home now to start rewatching it as I've reminded myself how much I enjoyed it. :D

Ordered. I await the sensations that I'm watching something good, made a bad purchase, then the fascination with a great story, to follow accordingly upon my viewing it.

Here's a little something in thanks, though it's decidedly shorter and the acting is equally questionable. Enjoy!

Already watched it and it is a nice piece of work, although I'm a little tired of hearing Two Steps From Hell in every trailer I watch. Nevermind, I'm sure I'll watch it again soon.
