You can't have too much of a good thing, but what if you've got several good things, all wailing for your attention like newborns in a nursery? And what if one of those babies is considerably fatter and louder than the others? What if he's got the Cold-Blooded perk and akimbo FM9s?
Xbox 360's software portfolio is a mightily diverse one, ranging from the rustling enjoyments of Viva Pinata to the phallic thrills of Shadows of the Damned. But the conversation is perhaps an eensy-weensy bit dominated - a tad over-shadowed, as it were - by the shooter genre and its foremost advocate, Sir Duty of the Call family. In today's poll, we ask: what would you change?

You take it from there. Look, we done some boxes.

I've plumbed for RPG but can I just say that what I really want is more companies to stick to what they are good at. An RPG should be an RPG not a mindless hack and slash nor a corridor shooter with a lot of dialogue. I want more companies to follow Bethesda's lead by refusing to compromise what they do well and realise that 'broadening appeal' almost invariably results in pissing off your existing fans whilst not really attracting new ones.

No multiple choice? That makes me a sad bunny OXM. A sad bunny.
I'd like to see more RPGS good hardcore ones, JRPGS, Strategy games and ones like Catherine and Bastion. You know the unique ones that stand out from the crowd of boring shooters.
I think games like those speak volumes of the creative passion the people behind those unique experiences have. Which is nice and something that I would love to see more of. Sure they might not cater to "casual" gamers but I will always prefer them and it's something you just don't see with other entertainment mediums.

What is the difference between a 'Beat 'Em Up' and a 'Fighting game'?
That's a question by the way, not the opening line to a joke.

Totally agree with the SRPG, there have been hardly any this generation. The only true SRPG I have played on the Xbox was the utterly charming Vandal Hearts remake. I used to love games like Sukoden Tactics or the Disgaea series but the no-one wants to make them for the 360. Does anyone know if Vandal Hearts sold well on Arcade? If not then this maybe the answer.....

I voted rpg and agree with you cunning if it is done well they are still one of my favorite geners. We do have some this year like the witcher 2 and ME3 but you can opt to play that all action.
CunningSmile on 17 Feb '12 said:
I'm not sure about on this poll, but usually a fighting game is something like Street Fighter or Tekken where you fight one on one, whilst a Beat 'Em Up is an old school side scrolling game like Streets of Rage where you move through numerous anonymous goons until you reach an end of level bad guy.

Beat 'Em Up - Think Batman on the nes or Battletoads.
Fighter - Mortal Kombat.

Yeah it is a pity there isn't a multiple choice option as I could pick a couple that I think we are lacking in.
In the end I opted for 'Platformers' although I could have picked 'Horror' or 'Adventure' games - I went for platformers as there are a few more of the others than decent platformers. I grew up playing platformers and it seems that this genre is seriously lacking especially quality platformers. I would really like a decent 3D platformer that would rival Mario 64 or Banjo Kazooie.
I don't think we need more shooters as that seems to be the most common genre of gaming at the moment
I would really like a good single player adventure or story based game too - it seems that a lot are getting ruined by trying to put multi-player into the equation.
Horror is quite lacking too and a lot of games really don't have the atmosphere or tension that really scare but rely on gore or action instead

Normally I would have gone for RPG like a shot , but with Skyrim eating up so much of my time and being so amazingly awesome , I'm yearning for some instant gratification rather than the slow burn of a good RPG , it's one of the reasons I rented The Darkness 2 ( great game ) over Amalur , and why I'll be renting Soul Calibur V before it as well , I just don't have it me to start another grind. ( however much I'll probably enjoy it )
So I plumped for Beat em ups , if only because I yearn for a new Killer Instinct , come on Rare , sort it.

Odd , Iv'e always thought of it as the other way round , I can see your logic though with shoot 'em ups being like R-type and Gradius , and Beat 'em ups I suppose being a punching and kicking equivalent.
Oh well , guess I've voted for the wrong one , or have I ?

Hmm, decisions decisions...
Anyone unfortunate enough to have read my posts will know im an RPG nut, either Japanese or western, makes no difference. My current worry with the genre is the lines are becoming blurry by devs going on about their game having 'RPG elements' and a lot of RPG-lite games that have mass market appeal. Nothing wrong with that but at present it seems from what i read and hear that RPG's are becoming the 'go-to' genre for developers who decide they don't want to make a shooter. The genre has long been overlooked with some decent titles on the xbox 360 having the potential to have been amazing with some more investment and gamer interest - so from this point of view it's win win. What i hope we don't get is what we have in the shooter area now, endless rehashes following the same old rinse-repeat formula whereby diversity disappears. Luckily in the last few months we've had Skyrim, Dark Souls, FFXII, KoA:Reckoning, and with Zelda & Last Story on Wii & The Witcher 2 coming soon i've got enough to keep me occupied till xmas - and i didn't mention ME3 (which many will argue is not an RPG). Oh yeah - the new South Park (RPG) game sounds better every time i hear something about it!
A proper proper stealth game would also be very welcome, really hoping Hitman scratches this itch. Would be great if Ezio's replacement got back to silent killing too! Lastly, please can we have some FUN racers that are not solely concerned with shaving milliseconds off laptimes? Dirt showdown has potential, but something mariokart-y and decent (sonic one has very mixed reviews).
Maverick_McCool on 17 Feb '12 said:
That's why I didn't pick RPG , there are a bunch of great sounding out or on the horizon already , plus "RPG elements" seems to added to almost every game out there.
I would like to see some good "Stealth" games as well , looking forward to the new Hitman.
I'm still voting for a new Killer Instinct though.

I'm going to be a snide so-and-so and say I'd rather have more quality games than more games in any specific genre. I like the best games in any genre, because a great game is a great game. Some genres are under-represented, like platformers (probably because they don't really work in 3D), but I like to hope that the industry is still in a place where real quality sells.
I'd like a new Killer Instinct game too, Maverick, but Rare are too busy playing with Kinect. Neither Nintendo KI game is available on the Wii's Virtual Console, so there may still be hope.

I miss the stealth games like XIII and splinter cell but most importantly, bring back coolass cartoon character games like rayman, Spyro and stuff like that! not those characters specifically but games like that with a unique world, hard 3D platforming and funny story were so much better than the military shooters everyone bums today! I love Battlefield of course I just miss the light heartedness of gaming

Heyyyy, wait a minute, I know what you're referring to...that spacey one...with the Gilbert and Sullivan-singing guy
I went for Real Time Stategy (or I would have, were it an option, but instead we have the more generic 'strategy' which many games could argue they incorporate). RTS is what got me into games in the first place - well, them and Sonic 2, so it would be rude not to give them a plug.
Trouble is that the issues with not having a mouse are vast. Surely some sort of Kinect motion control would be perfect for keeping hold of your forces? A mixture of voice and actions? No? Just me then...
I do think the 360 has the most diverse range of games on the market though, though the Xbox exclusive is something of a rarity these days.
Jet Thrust on 18 Feb '12 said:
voted for Adventure but its most likely between that and RTS.
I would love to see an Adventure game crossed between GTA's free roaming open world and the fun factor of Monkey Island, its unhinged logic and sense of humour. Something with swathes of well written, well acted characters, beautiful locations, great storytelling, myths and legends, plenty of swashbuckling, but not too bogged down with stats and number crunching etc
Not enough quality Pirate/Adventure games for my liking! Risen 2 looks decent tho
I'm not entirely sure how successfully the RTS genre would port to our beloved box, joypad issues etc Company of Heroes and Dawn of War are my two fav games, let alone RTS games, but i think they would require some seriously nifty rejigging to compensate for a lack of key-commands.

Needs more? Well, it needs more RTS. And more old school RPG's instead of only action-rpg with modern twists like ME or TES.
OXM ETboy on 18 Feb '12 said:
I'm having a weirdly RTS-heavy weekend - picked up EndWar and Brutal Legend. Both are awesome, though Jack Black's definitely a little past his sell-by-date, and I do wish EndWar was a bit closer to Total War i.e. had a turn-based strategy component.
Might revisit Civ Rev too. More of this please.
golliwoza on 18 Feb '12 said:
RTS would of been my other option. There are few good RTS games on 360 and I really liked end war, it was really cool how you could control your game with the mic. Just a shame that the online community was full of jerks who would insult you after everymatch. I have never been called the same word so many times in one day.
SidTheSloth on 18 Feb '12 said:
I despair of people talking about RTS games on 360 and so many who never tried R.U.S.E
To be honest though, it's difficult to justify buying an RTS when the PC version is usually better AND easier to control. As much as i loved Civ Rev and played it to death it's not a patch on Civ IV i don't think, which would be nothing short of horrific on 360...
Anyone who wants a new RTS, has a PC and hasn't tried it, have a go on Starcraft 2 (or the original!) - kills all known C&C's stone dead!

I think that there could be more hack'n'slash games. Don't know if I have just made up that genre
(maybe included in fighters), but I have in mind a mixture of a fighter and the combat from Mirror's Edge and Assassin's Creed , possibly set in medieval Europe
. Different buttons correspond to different attack types in a fluid, but constrictive, first person view. Felt that while Skyrim had a good combat system, it also had a serve as an RPG (a damn good one), so could not live up to battles such as in 1066. Maybe I am dreaming a bit high
bamozzy on 18 Feb '12 said:
I wouldn't mind a few multi-genre titles like maybe a shooter cross hack n' slash - Star Wars instantly springs to mind as you can use Blasters (shooting) and swap to Light Sabres for Hack n Slash. Or even a shooter cross fighter, Shooting from range but if you get within a certain distance of an opponent it becomes a fighting game.
These are just a couple of ideas I could think of a lot more.....

family friendly shovelware for the kinect!
OK, maybe not. When you look at the games which are unique to 360 and which genres are covered, there is actually a lot of space to be covered. 360 really only has its own shooter, racer and pseudo-rpg in fable. As much as I hate to say it, PS3 has us whipped in this department. We can argue that Gears is better than Resistance, and that Forza is better than Gran Turismo, but Fable is weak sauce, and PS3 has Uncharted which is one this generations greatest ip's, and God of War which is consistently excellent. Even the Wii is comparable with Zelda and Mario being 2 amazing franchises. We're on the losing end here. The only real genre we have covered is strategy with Viva Pinata. An excellent couple of games no doubt, but its not exactly the game of choice you'd want to use in a pro 360 argument when presented with Uncharted and Mario as the bench mark.
In the end, I voted for Platformers even though I don't like them simply because they have been criminally under represented on the 360. With rare in the fold, Microsoft had a perfect opportunity to develop a platformer to rival mario, and the just didn't bother, that's a shame. Granted, I don't like Platformers, but I DO appreciate them and can recognize a good one when I see it.
Along those lines, 360 also needs its own action-platformer like Tomb Raider or Uncharted. It's a genre which needs to be covered.
I seriously think Microsoft need to put some money down and start their own games development studio, finance them well and let them develop these games. It's shocking how few quality in house ip's there actually are for the 360.
Also of note is the dearth of strategy games available in general on console. There is this crazy idea that consoles and their gamers can't handle RTS or other strategy type games. Complete BS. The very first RTS game that I can think of was Dune II, and it was on the Megadrive, which also had Cannon Fodder and Theme Park. The playstation had Constructor as well as all the Command and Conquers, more theme games I believe and Civ 2, which was excellent, if a little slow to process. Consoles have always been able to handle and play these games, they're not so sophisticated that they work badly when controlled with a pad rather than a keyboard and mouse. Tropico is amazing and works perfectly on 360, the command and conquer games are excellent too. The voice command for End War works well, even if you do sound like a nozzle playing it. Console can handle RTS games, citybuilders and turn based strategy games without a problem, so its about damn time they were allowed to do so.

Also the man who said a new Viva Pinata game hit the nail on the head, great games!!
Also a new banjo: nuts and bolts, that game is a hidden gem also!!
People who say "RIP Rare" couldnt be further from the truth!! (Kinect sports is also quality)

I must admit I actually like Kinect too and certainly enhances my (and my family) gaming experiences - My Daughters (who are not into gaming at all) love Dance Central 2 and want to get some of the fitness type games. We have ALL had a lot of fun with it!!
I must admit that what Rare are producing these days is not really a patch on what they produced for the N64. I appreciate that Kinect sports is good fun (I haven't got 2 yet) but I am disappointed that they seem to be concentrating on Kinect based games. This is the company that brought us Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Blast Corps, Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64 on the N64 - I don't think ANY of the 360 titles have really matched ANY of those!!

Heartily disagree Sir...! It's of course subjective as they came out at different times, but much as i love Viva Pinata, was it really better at launch than blast corps/goldeneye/perfect dark? (Not that it matters one jot and everyone's opinion will be different!!)
danhalen74 on 22 Feb '12 said:
id like a command and conquer style game with perhaps a keyboard and mouse peripheral (how hard can that be compared to kinect?) i miss those kind of games and dont use a PC at home (using a Mac at work so need for home computer really)...that'd get my vote
bongmaster00 on 22 Feb '12 said:
while i agree Perfect Dark (still play it on 360 arcarde), goldeneye, diddy kong racing, blast corps etc were amazing games. I do feel Rare still produce good games on 360. Viva Pinata is an awesome game that not only suposed "hardcore gamers" (whateva that means) can enjoy as myself, but my misses can enjoy who can barely hold the pad. Banjo: nuts and bolts is also a wonderfull game full of charm and great gameplay/customisation. Probably one of the most under rated games this gen in my opinion! I may get slated for this but i also still play Perfect Dark Zero on my 360 (love the single player game as its more difficult and old skool than most new shooters) It doesnt hold your hand and funnel you through levels, usually missions are completed through trial and error and learning the game, which is how games used to be!! Couple that with the great work they have put in with kinect sports and I do feel some "gamers" slate them just because it isnt COD MW4000 they are producing. I agree whole heartedly that Rare were amazing back on the N64, but I in my opinion still think they are a top quality studio who release games i have hundreds of hours of fun with. On another note supporting British developers in such hard economic times can't be a bad thing either?? Rule Britannia and all that crap....
Off topic from Rare, I would love to see a Kinect version of Halo Wars and a Kinect version of Viva Pinata, 2 games i think if done correctly would be pretty sweet. All my friends who have slated and bad mouthed Kinect have quickly changed their mind once they have actually played one. The hatered and pure lies spread about Kinect by aparent gamers on the interweb borders on insane at times

I have been a huge fan of the Role playing Genre. MY favourite game genre is Turn Based RPG, There is hardly any on the 360! I personally would say Lost odyssey is my favourite game on the 360. Game companies dont seem to like the old school turn based anymore, but Final Fantasy x and Legend of Dragoon were the best games in history. Please make more!
Clanger67 on 23 Feb '12 said:
Well there is xcom:enemy unknown that has been announced. That is turn based and if it is like the original you can upgrade your squad through the game and manage equipment. You can also research alien tech.,that you collect on missions for your own use.So it is kind of a rpg.

With the exception of the three Donkey Kong Country games, there aren't any Rare games on the Virtual Console. Rights issues arising from the sale of Rare to MS, I assume.

I never seem to have the time or inclination to get the N64 out of the loft, set it up and play it... I still have games to complete on my PS3 and xbox and as they are already set up, a lot easier and I am more inclined to play those games too.
