Microsoft has just released a new Xbox 360 system update, designed to "increase performance" in general and lay the smackdown on a niggling colour issue in particular.
"I wanted to let you know that the team has just released a system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox LIVE," the goodly Major Nelson informs. "Starting today when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you'll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update. If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you'll be back online in a few moments.

There's no word on whether this will address resolution and wash-out problems encountered by some users, as detailed in this blog. We'll see if we can get hold of the full update notes.

Glad this is finally getting sorted.
Has anyone else had trouble with signing in to Xbox Live on start-up. I always get the "can't connect to xbox live" error pretty much every time I start my console. When I select the "test connection" option it signs me out and does its thing then connects with no problem. This gets very annoying. Its only been happening since the last update.
Not to mention the black screen crash I get when starting Arkham City, which is another problem many are suffering from but no solution being offered

Did they ever acknowledge that they switched it so only Zune videos play at 1080p, and eveything else is 720p?
And is putting everything back to HD part of the 'fix'?

on ocasion, I had the same log in problem as you for a week or so and then it got back to normal by itself. But it was months ago with a previous update. As for the Batman: ACity problem, seems it's pretty common. I always get that black screen when I try to launch it after I installed the game into the hard-drive. I have to turn-off the console and restart it. And then it works.

I've had the not connecting problem a lot over the last few weeks. Sometimes it works first time (as it should) but others I have to run the test two or three times and turn off and reset my router before it will connect. Not really a problem, unless like me you are using the much publicised Cloud storage.

I have had these very issues! Only Tuesday this week I loaded Batman AC to chat to calendar man - and suffered the fabled black screen lock up. The Live login thing is just annoying. Hope it's soon fixed.

I tweeted that Jonty chap to see if they were going to cover the Arkham City black screen of doom problem and he said he'll look into it. Not heard anything since though. I hope they do a piece about it as it seems to be a problem that a lot of people are suffering from but RockSteady have apparently failed to acknowledge it. A bit of media attention might get them to pull their finger out and fix it.
For the record (in case it makes any difference) I have a Gears Of War Xbox 360 S (320gb HDD), the game is installed to the HDD and I have the Catwoman, Nightwing and Robin DLC along with the challenge map pack, Arkham City Skins pack, Batman Inc. Batsuit skin and the Batman: Arkham City Title Update all installed as well. It seems to happen when starting the game from the dashboard and occasionally after completing a challenge map.

My problem may be the result of a hack, but it's been funny for a while now. Sometimes tells me they can't log me in due to an invalid payment option. I log in and delete the card that's on there (as I'm happy being a Silver Member for the moment due to lack of time) and it just hangs, sometimes completes, and then does the same next time I turn the Xbox on.
