Ninja Theory has fielded fan outcry, backlash from series creator Hideki Kamiya and even death threats over its Westernised Devil May Cry reboot, but the company has refused to budge on the change of style. Speaking to OXM in an interview you'll read in issue 82, creative director Tameem Antoniades spoke up once more for the new Dante, insisting that you can't paper over cultural differences.
Some players have taken issue with Dante's perceived "camper" look, but this has more to do with different expectations surrounding Western games, Antoniades argued. "Somehow Japanese character styles get away with it," he said, when we asked whether players found camp leads from Japanese devs easier to swallow.
Capcom's Alex Jones expanded on the point. "Japanese style ethos does tend to involve make characters look cool for the sake of looking cool, adding odd accessories, crazy hairstyles and colour, cowboy boots and so on simply because they look cool.
"We in the West tend to be more functional adding things that have meaning and being able to explain that meaning. Why does Dante have white hair? I want to make a little story around that and explain it. And so on for the rest of his design choices."
"We've not so much done away with any of the Japanese aspects of the series," Antoniades resumed. "But are more building on the foundations of the franchise to develop a game that has a different flavour. We grew up on US and European movies, comics, music and general culture. That's what we're tapping into.
"We're not pretending we are Japanese nor making apologies for that."
Past Ninja Theory games have worked within lush fantasy fictions cobbled together from medieval European and Asiatic cultures. While pursuing a new art direction and story, Ninja Theory has been careful to respect Devil May Cry's combat system - read more on the subject over here, and pick up issue 82 itself for the Antoniades interview in full.

While I would disagree that Japanese developers add "odd accessories" to make the character look cool (when I always thought they were famous for adding oversized breasts
) I admire the fact that Ninja Theory aren't budging or backing down on their stance with the new Dante, and lets face it, Tameem's recieved some very nasty feedback over the last year including death threats, so the fact that they're taking all the backlash on the chin is just remarkable, having played Enslaved: OTTW, I don't doubt they'll make this DmC into another great game.

enslaved an average game with good graphics and heavenly sword which is utter brown rain from what i heard of the story
i don't know if it's true but i'm sure some one will correct it if i'm wrong and i'm sorry if it is .
this dante is an alternate reality verson who is half human half demon and half angel they've done away with the devil triger
so now it slows down time ( how original ) .
and now they're insulting fans who buy the game .
if you don't listen to the fans they won't buy the game i'm not
and the people who sent teh death threats are fannys

Thank you, sonicmark, for being the first person to say something sensible about Ninja Theory's efforts to make the latest DMC into a fresh outing. The last game wasn't awful, but it was lacking whatever special sauce that DMC3 had to put your synapses into overdrive better than a line of...stuff I've never tried.
This game looks like it's going to be a hardcore action experience the likes of which we haven't seen since the ridiculously over-the-top leather-clad fetishist Bayonetta punched two holes where our eye sockets used to be. Let the conservative fans keep the original DMC if they like - I certainly will, as it's a great series - but it's a sad world when things aren't allowed to change at all just for the sake of nostalgia.

The problem here is that:
DMC DOESN'T NEED A REBOOT!
DMC4 needs a sequel. As far as the DMC canon goes and as a fan I want to know where the Nero story goes, and how/if Virgil is related. Its easy. DMC has a great and dedicated fan base and given the sales figures for DMC4 we deserve a sequel.
That being said, it makes me angry at Capcom thinks differently. However this is not completely unexpected since Capcom makes horrible decisions and is a complete mess.
On to NT.....
NT has done everything to provoke fans of the original DMC, and the biggest jack@$$ of them all is Tameem Antoniades. Antoniades can't say anything positive about the DMC franchise and his promotion of his NT's version makes it sound like they are saving the francise. When in reality the only thing Antoniades has done is redesigning one of video games most beloved characters to look like himself:

NT is going to take a great franchise with great action and wrap it up in some of NT's copy and paste textures and trying to pull off a DMC game on a 30FPS engine. Anyone that has played ANY of NT games know it looks good in stills, but when there is motion there are texture fills, and screen tearing all over the place all at an abysmal 30FPS. DMC is shaping up to be horrible, and as a DMC fan I think it couldn't be in worst hands in my opinion.

Couldn't have put it any better myself, it clear you have at least thought about the game development rationally unlike so many others
I am concerned that some of the 'die hard' fans of DMC appear completely illiterate and do not seem to be embarrassed by posting a response that seems to be written by a chimp with a wax crayon up his backside, squatting over some sugar paper.
Please note: If you want to be treated seriously, consider the use of capital letters, grammar and sentence structures as most of the people on the forum are mature and have at least a basic grasp of the English language. Basically the points raised about what these "fans" think have been made invalid in my opinion as I can’t treat them seriously and will go with what I think as a DMC fan.
You know who you are! Sorry readers for the grammar Nazi in me coming out, long week.

That picture comparison made me smile; you're probably right that there's some ego going on there, but we all know how developers and publishers like to rattle each others' chains across every genre. Activision and EA's ongoing punch-up over who designs the most immersive/realistic/visually brutal/awesome multiplayer - or whatever else - experience has gone way past the point of tiresome.
Being a fan of the originals, I can't say I wasn't impressed by Virgil. He had a great fashion sense and was probably the most interesting villain of the series.
But did we really play these games for the story? I mean, come on. The writing was so cheesy you'd need a hundred burgers just to balance out the equation, let alone the fact that the plot makes no sense at all. A demon saved the world 2000 years ago and sealed himself away in the process...yet Dante looks about 25 at the time of DMC4. Who cares? It's a fantastic action series. And if you're looking for great plots there are much better ones out there than that little Virgil usurper Nero can offer.

I agree with you I don't play the games for the story, but I do pay attention to it. The cheese is thick but its made to be cheesy and its only slightly thicker than any other game out there. DMC games made fun of itself which gave the games great personality. I cannot comment on the DMC refresh in terms of story, maybe they'll nail it, but given previous NT games all of them were a completely generic/predictable/uninteresting story with self important dialog that seemed to never end. Also the fact that NT makes beautiful games to the detriment of frame rate and texture fill isn't making me feel any better.
I categorized the DMC game play as "accessible enough". I could hand the controller to one of my friends and they could beat the game but they aren't going to S it but they could beat it and enjoy the story. Meanwhile you have the people like myself that practiced the game over several play sessions trying to S everything on DMD etc. and could jump cancel and combo the hell out of nearly all situations. DMC was accessible but the controls were so refined that it actually takes some skill it pull of some of the better combos and juggles. This was only possible because of the control design, response, and framerate. I have played some of NT's better games and games like Heavenly Sword had abysmal controls that locked you out while in animation or didn't respond. I am not saying DMC is going to have the control response from Heavenly Sword or Enslaved but that isn't a good track record in my opinion. The fact that they cut all previous DMC framerate in half to 30FPS for this reboot is disheartening, because perfectly timed events like juggling/jump canceling are either going to be more about luck than skill, or be so heavily assisted that all combos will be redundant and boring.

Get a clue..it's NOT about the hair color or the fact you aren't Japanese, Ninja Theory.
It's about the fact you insult anyone who doesn't like what you're doing, calling them "trolls" and "haters" basically, despite the fact you KNEW what you were doing when you said the old Dante "wasn't cool" and that you didn't care for the original Devil May Cry games. (anyone who doesn't believe me, look it up..they said this when they released the first debut trailer..BEFORE the fan outcry). That is a clear insult, and if you can't take the heat for saying it, don't say it.
Now that people are drawing comics of the fictional character you designed being mistreated (read: it's NOT a real character) you consider it a death threat. That's not a death threat...that's satire. Stop this sensationalism and acting like a victim when you started this all in the first place. Bear in mind, I do NOT support death threats, however, you have to understand that YOUR definition of a "death threat" is not the same as the generally excepted definition. Did someone actually send you a message threatening physical bodily harm to YOU? And if so, have you notified the authorities? If not, I'm sorry, that's NOT a death threat..that's an example of y'all having extremely thin skin.
Moving on..this is not how mature adults act. If an adult is told by someone that they don't like what he's doing, he shrugs it off. He doesn't call them names, he doesn't throw a temper tantrum, he doesn't act like a victim. He moves on with his life, end of story. When you're mature, you have thick skin. Why? Because like it or not, the world is a rough place. It just comes with the territory
However, this does not describe their behavior. They are acting like over-privileged, spoiled children. Name calling? Being overly sensitive to criticism? That isn't the mark of a company I want to support. It's the mark of at best a neophyte, someone who is still learning the ropes. I don't think they understand what "customer service" is...and being that the maxim for years has been "the costumer is always right," i think they still have a lot of learning to do. Is it ok to insult the costumer not just to their face but publicly? NO! Everyone in EVERY job knows if you are rude to a customer, you're getting fired. End of story. Their treatment of the fans is something that is ethically unforgivable.
Finally, let me address some of the people who think that we as Devil May Cry fans are overstepping their bounds, claiming material that isn't ours. I've seen some comments saying that "NT are the game designers, they hold the rights, let them do their job." But they aren't. Their job is to make something to please the fans, that will sell. If you aren't doing that, I'm sorry, you aren't doing your job.
All these points are why I will NOT be buying this game, in fact, I'll be boycotting it. I cannot in good conscience support a company who operates like this. End of story

I really don't know who Ninja Theory are trying to impress. Dante is one of the coolest characters in gaming and they've turned him into an anorexic emo muppet. Their "reimagining" of him as half human, half demon and half angel doesn't make any sense, either. I reckon Capcom know this is going down the toilet, because they're re-releasing HD versions of the first three original DMC games before this is even out.
I believe the series needs a reboot, for the simple reason that DMC2 didn't fit with the rest of the games, but NT aren't the people to do it. Capcom should have given the reboot to Platinum and it would have been safe in the hands of the series' original creator, Hideki Kamiya. That's what the fans wanted.
