We've been playing around with the new dashboard, and dozens of questions leapt out at us like a pub quiz on a ghost train. Where've games gone? What's Bing's beef with our amazing voice commands? And what are these cloud beacons doing in our Lovefilms? We've figured most of it out now - but if you've got any questions, ask them here...
How do beacons work?
Beacons are like sending a game invite, but instead of going to individual Xbox Live friends or a party, the notification appears on all of your friends' screens. Get to them by hitting the guide button on your controller and selecting the 'Beacons & Activity' option, where you can select a particular game or app, add a personal message and then hit 'Set beacon' to ping your buddies.
There's also the option to share on your Facebook wall, which will require you to link your Xbox Live account to your Facebook account if you haven't already. Once you've done that, you can add a message and post it to your Facebook wall, where it will also appear in your friends' feeds. Probably 11 hours after the fact, but never mind.
How do I share Achievements on Facebook?
Relatively easy, this one. Every individual achievement now has a share option at the bottom of its description. Again, you'll need to link your Xbox Live and Facebook accounts, but then it's as easy as adding a message to let the world know how brilliant you are and then clicking share.
You don't even have to have just unlocked the achievement - you can dredge up accomplishments from your dim and distant gaming history if you so wish. Just remember it'll probably be as much fun to read as Raptr spam on Twitter
Where are Indie and Arcade Games?
It's pretty obvious that there's an "entertainment" marketing push driving the current layout. Games have slid horizontally to number five in a list of eight. Quickplay and Play Disc on the Homes Screen will give you ready access to recent games, but what if you want to find new ones?
If you're looking for Indie or Arcade games, you're in for a rummage. Select the Games tab, Games Marketplace, another Games tab, then Game Types. Inside that well-buried folder is a trove of Games On Demand (including Bulletstorm for £20), Xbox Originals (Jade Empire for 1200MP), Indie Games and Arcade titles. We're anticipating a certain amount of backlash for this - from Arcade devs and fans alike.
This has been replaced with Download Profile. We move their profiles regularly between the office and home, so this is one of our favourite new features - you can install your profile on more than one machine, without that artificially slow "recovery" process.
It works like MSN Messenger used to - log in somewhere new, and you'll be logged out on the older account. Simple, and much, much better than the old system.
Security tip: Don't check the "remember password" box if you're downloading to a friend's console. You don't want them logging you out by accident. Or posting on your Twitter...

This isn't necessarily about the dashboard update, but I was just wondering if LoveFilm is a free service or if it will be/is paid? And is it the same deal for YouTube?

It's actually a shame you can't swap what order the menus are in or get rid of that stupid large ad on home, I want my large Skyrim pic back damnit. They never got rid of that stupid grey blob that covers my Mass Effect theme either.

To be honest I like the new update and can see the potential. Admittedly my biggest disappointment was the lack of apps but over the next month this will be resolved.
The front page is a lot better as it has the disc drive and 5 most recent apps/games too. I was a little disappointed to see the games as the 5th heading but with voice activated menus it really doesn't matter. Besides I think I am more likely to look for videos than games as I tend to play mainly from my disc - Any recently played downloaded games are on the front page anyway
Lovefilm has no interest to me as it is a subscription service and I doubt that I would benefit long term from it.
The people I think who will be most disappointed by it will be those who do not have kinect as it certainly benefits from this addition.
The addition of TV on my xbox is a very welcome thing and I am sure for a number of people too - especially for those who have the console in a bedroom. Mine is connected to my 46" HD TV (along with Sky+HD and my PS3 too) and occasionally I have missed a programme but have no desire to watch on my laptop. So at least I can now catch up and watch in HD on a good sized screen. I know I had the function on the PS3 but the user interface is not that great and trying to find what you want is a laborious process (so only used in emergencies) Now with voice activated searches and controls I can see this being a joy to use.
Although I am the main gamer and owner of the consoles/games (my son has his own console) we all play on mine at times. This new update is very family friendly, easy to use and will make it a more entertaining experience for all.
Since I downloaded the demo of Dance Central 2, my older daughters (who are not gamers) now want kinect too. They do not get on with controllers and were considering a Wii. With this new dashboard it will be so easy for them to navigate and use. It is a much more social device and accessible by all.
So far I have had no problems finding anything and think this is the biggest update yet for Xbox and am looking forward to the new apps.

Some of the premium ones on xbl ARE free - you just have to hunt for them...
All of the movie related ones for eg - not perfect but free nonetheless. Space Marine was free i believe (i have it and i wouldnt have paid for it) and thats premium. Theres a Halo one thats free and premium too...
Any of the Twisted Pixel Arcade games (Splosion Man, Ms Splosion Man, Comic Jumper) come with a premium theme too
Ive had a good look trying to locate all the old sections on the dash i used to frequent and have managed to find most of them - still not a fan of the update - the "home" page is all but ruined by the huge scrolling ad in the centre - i miss my avatar being constantly there too - its stupid that the poor guy is now banished to the social page (and smaller on screen too) - when theres so much empty space on either side of the screen and a huge damn ad on the front page

So disappointed they have not removed that horrible grey block which blurs out the bottom half of the screen. It really has no use apart from blocking out our themes.
I've had live for years and all i seem to be noticing more of is advertising. It is the same old moan, but for a service that we pay yearly for, why do we need to be pestered with adverts? You pay for a TV license and get advert-free BBC.
Has anyone else noticed that you can find the option to change your gamertag (costing 800mp) before you can even get to view your achievements!
Im not overly keen on the update, but what other choice do we have but to accept it?
One thing i did like was some new addtions to themes. They have now theme packs for Slipkont, Trivium, the ramones, and loads more bands. Awesome huh? Only 50mp too. Good untill you realise they are completely pointless as the pictures are completely obscurred by dashboard pop up and home screen

Good idea Bam, I'm a sucker for freebies.
My only gripe so far is that the Inside Xbox stuff (I know Andy and Dan aren't universally popular but I like them) have been relegated from an entire section on the old dash to a tiny app hidden under TV. Seems a bit of a slap in the face for two guys that obviously have worked very hard to take it from basically a weekly text message on the original xbox to a Europe wide service covering light entertainment, tips, reviews and previews.
And to who ever asked the Lovefilm stuff is a pay service but they are now offering a £5 a month xbox only price plan for new customers who are planning on just streaming. It does take them a while to get new films on there but they have quite a good range and I've found several films that aren't available on DVD at present.
bamozzy on 8 Dec '11 said:
LOL me too and begrudge using my MS points on things that don't do anything - they should be used for games or add-ons that actually provide entertainment and not just cosmetic or aesthetic. Avatar items are a joke at the cost of some of them - I can buy a game for the cost of some of them. Most Avatar items are advertising an allegiance to a game so should be free or unlockable awards. I shouldn't have to pay to wear an item that advertises their game!!
I enjoy the inside xbox and other little videos too, considering where they have moved games too, I think they got the better deal LOL. Still at least you know where to find them now so navigating to it is not a problem - Just got to get used to where everything is now. Loving the voice activated commands as this makes navigating so easy and quick - It almost doesn't matter where things are or what order they come in.
I can't justify a Lovefilm subscription as I know that it won't get used - I have Sky+HD and still have a backlog of recorded stuff to watch. I never needed it for my PS3 so won't be getting it for my xbox either.

If you go into the Lovefilm app on the dashboard and go to price plans they list the usual plans that you can get on their website but also a £4.99 one listed as being "No discs at home, Stream only" It's probably an introductory price to get as many new Xbox customers as possible.

what is the actual point in this new update?
beacons- same as invite to party etc so seems pointless
cloud storage- again pointless as i have something like 185gb of memory left so 512mb really doesnt amount to any interest me/help to me
anything to do with kinect/voice commands etc- again whats the point, i have a finger if i want to turn my xbox on...and i have a controller if i want to find things, i dont have kinect and have no intention so again pointless to me
i really dont see the point of changing things and confusing people, there was nothing wrong with the old dashboard so why spend a shit load of money/ time in changing it
bamozzy on 8 Dec '11 said:
It seems you need to do some research as beacons are NOT like invite to party at all!!!!
Cloud storage has nothing to do with extra memory - it is used for saving your profile and/or a game save to be able to access it from ANY console.
Kinect voice commands is just a lot easier than navigating, typing out a search for anything or even controlling what you view - watch the demo's and break down of what this brings.
Obviously you are easily confused so do some research before you make any more stupid comments
CunningSmile on 8 Dec '11 said:
The cloud storage is designed for people like me. Both my girlfriend and I have consoles in our respective homes and the cloud storage will allow me to start games round her place and then borrow the game without having to start again, or bring games I'm already playing round her place. At the moment I have to worry about whether or not I can find my flash drive to do that and this will save a huge amount of hassle, especially come Christmas when I start playing Skyrim.
CPT Random 82 on 8 Dec '11 said:
Is the cloud feature used for just save game data?
This would make more sense to me allowing transportation of checkpoints on current games to mates houses.
Not too clear myself what it is used for.
CunningSmile on 8 Dec '11 said:
I logged onto my dog's US account last night and watched the Cloud 101 video.
The cloud storage is just used for a couple of saved games (transfer to your HD when you don't need to transport them anymore) so you can access them from any console you are logged onto. When you select a storage device Cloud will now come up next to the usual hard drive option. Your profile doesn't need to be stored to Cloud (or at least your 512mb of Cloud) as they have now sped up the recovery of gamer tags, you basically do it once to each console you are likely to use and then after that you can just sign in instantly, the same as logging onto your email from any PC. Doing this will automatically update any new achievements etc. which MS are apparently all backing up to a central cloud storage.
As I said above, it might not be any use to a lot of people but for people like me who regularly play on multiple consoles it will save a lot of time and hassle doing it all with flash drives.
CPT Random 82 on 8 Dec '11 said:
Thanks mate for clearing that up! Really helpful info there.
I'll probably just use the recover gamertag function and a couple of game saves then when i pop round to my mates. That or mess their stats up on their profiles

Here's the price list from the Lovefilm App (lovefilm > how it works > our packages):
£5/month, which is "a special launch price". This is for "unlimited access to thousands of your favourite films". I'm not being sarcastic with these quotes, I'm quoting with them
You can also combine it with their postal service for £8, £10, and £13.27 for 1, 2 or 3 simultaneous DVDs.
Lovefilm requires a Gold membership. I honestly can't see what the point of the more expensive memberships are, unless the streaming option has a seriously reduced library.
whelly1985 on 8 Dec '11 said:
so what are beacons then? sounds to me like party invite?
again to me cloud storage is pointless, why would i want to access my data on other peoples xbox?
i dont need to watch a demo regarding voice commands as it is irrelevant to me cos i dont have and have no intention of buying a kinect
but like you say i am easily confused and make stupid comments, that is MY view on the new update but clearly as i dont agree with you i am stupid
OXM Log on 8 Dec '11 said:
Yeah, it's just for save games.
Since the move from "Recover Gamertag" to "Download Profile" and the ability to download your profile to multiple machines, your Gamer Profile is now in the cloud by default, even if it is an Apple-y definition of cloud rather than, say, Google Docs
As for Arcade/Indie/GOD games, they've been kind of cloud-based since they started.

The old dashboard was badly organised and completely unequipped to deal with expansion. We were just used to it.
Anyway, Beacons vs Party Invites. Party Invites had to be sent to an individual. Beacons are a way of saying to everyone, both on XBL and Facebook, that you want to play a game. There's a much bigger reach with a beacon - although you do lose the personal impact of a one-to-one invite.
As bamozzy says, Cloud storage isn't about storage space, it's about accessibility, and voice commands are useful because it takes around 2% of the time to say "Xbox Bing Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2" than it does to type it in (without a chat pad, anyway).
This redesign is far more about positioning the Xbox as a serious entertainment hub as it is giving you another place to save your MW3 progress. That's why games seem tucked away. I really hope the pendulum swings back on that one. It'd be a real shame if Arcade and Indie developers suffered.
bamozzy on 8 Dec '11 said:
Did you not read the article?? Beacons are the first thing it talks about and are purely there for gaming! They show friends what game you are wanting to play - even if you are not currently playing it - A party is all about the chat and require you inviting specific people it also is not about gaming. Beacons are about finding friends to play a specific game with - Just because you have a beacon it does not mean that you can chat to people (like in party). Party is still there and would still require you to join a party if you wanted to chat with just those ones although you can invite others who are not playing that game to chat too as well
Cloud storage is for if you go to any other xbox console (such as a mates house) and can access you profile in the same way you can access emails from any PC - you can also have a couple of game saves so that you can carry on where you left off and save all progress without memory sticks or transporting your xbox around. It is not about extra storage space for your hard drive - I have 185gb so why do I want an extra 512mb
Several posts after has also described what cloud storage is for and why it is beneficial to some. Personally I don't use xbox any where else apart from home so has little use to me but it is an added feature that will benefit a lot of people and I may well benefit from it in the future. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Just because you don't have kinect and have no intention of using it - doesn't mean to say there is no point in it - in fact it makes everything so much easier. Do you have a keypad? If not trying to find anything on bing will really take time having to key in every character with a control pad. I just have to say it and it will find it for me - They same goes for navigation and control of TV - watch the demo and that will show you what the point of it is. But then if you are not going to get it or not interested - why ask 'what's the point?
I never said you were stupid but your comments are - especially considering the article describes what each of these things are and do. It shows that you have not read it and just posted or have no understanding of the written word

I 'nothing' the new dashboard really...
Don't hate it, don't like it, feel very indifferent about it overall.
As some have mentioned i find it bizarre that games have been almost hidden - not sure why you can't 'build' your own tabs either, surely would be a great way to use kinect too, dragging and dropping the bits you want/don't want around?
I really hope the lack of new ips coming from microsoft themselves and gamer support in general (chasing the mainstream/casual gamer) doesn't indicate some sort of complacency on their part. As Sega found out, gamers can be incredibly fickle.
I don't mind them adding all netflix/iplayer etc, but the one thing that is still truly missing for it to be an entertainment hub is a sodding blu-ray player despite what they say to the contrary about it being unecessary!!

bamozzy on 8 Dec '11 said:
Themes do work and do put a background behind the friends - you can see this by using night? (I think its called) default one - it puts skate ramps behind them - The theme I used before and still use now appears to work the same. The downside to the layout is with the boxes taking up much more of the screen, the background to the theme is more hidden now.

I have to say I like the new dashboard in nearly all ways.
I think it's smart. HOWEVER........ I do believe some major obvious oversights have occurred.
Whether anyone wants to dispute otherwise or not... the XBOX is a " GAMES CONSOLE ", it's great to see alot of new stuff coming to the dashboard, but to push games (which should be the primary use of the machine) so far down the list is just silly. I would like to see an update correct this and move games right back up to the next page after home.
The social thing now with facebook and twitter is becoming too prominent in my opinion, I don't hold accounts and so for it to be more important on the dashboard than my games is annoying (PS before anyone comments im only 25 who is very technologically driven I just thing when I want to socialise I will use my phone or meet with them.)
The last point is the lack of Apps... this should have been quite a launch collection, chances are people will be bored of the idea before anything really good comes out. I have also noticed all the current apps to come out of video/tv based anything else cool coming out ?

Woohoo - some new apps added today.MSN Video Player (the best of the apps) Has a lot of content including Comedy, documentaries, News, Drama etc.
Muzo - free music videos
BlinkBox - requires a £1 deposit on registration
even though it has FREE tv GRRRRRRRRR
, YouTube but lot of my videos are not playable on my xbox due to content restrictions grrrrrrrrr
Its not like they are offensive - mostly just music clips and have no offensive language at all. One of my playlists has 10 videos of Epic Guitarists - so purely instrumental but only 1 plays due to content restrictions - the one that does is a live recording of Steve Vai at Donington but does have a swear word in the intro so don't understand why some don't play. Besides I am over 18 anyway and family content on xbox turned off.
Personally I think all accounts (including xbox live) should have your age restrictions related to your date of birth. If I am over 18 all games, videos etc should be up to me to play. If people under 18 try to access games (such as MW3) the console should stop the game from running and come up with an age inappropriate message. The same should also be true for all video, tv, additional content.
CunningSmile on 14 Dec '11 said:
My biggest gripe with Blinkbox (probably the app I was most looking forward to) isn't the one pound deposit but the fact none of the free stuff from their website is available! There were half a dozen programmes I was planning on watching and they aren't there
I've emailed Blinkbox and I'll let you know if I get a half decent reply.
And has anyone else noticed that despite what MS said in advance the Bing search doesn't include apps, just the MS products? What's the point of having a search function if you still can't find what your looking for?
bamozzy on 14 Dec '11 said:
Good job I cancelled my registration at the point of asking for the deposit on BlinkBox. I was only interested in their free tv content as some series are quite good and worth watching again (if they are free) So I was very disappointed by this. Also by youtube as so many videos are restricted despite being in my playlist.
I knew the Bing Search and kinect would not work with youtube but didn't know about other apps. MSN video player app is by far the best of the apps so far and the voice control is a very cool feature.
Anyway, I would be interested to hear what BlinkBox respond with. I think they are trying to cash in on the xbox customers and should maybe have 2 levels (a premium where all content is available and free where only free content is available) of subscription - I already pay for a tv licence, Sky+HD with ALL channels and xbox gold so won't pay for any more content - especially as I have a PC too. Its not like I have a lack of things to watch!!

Very unhelpfully Blinkbox came back with two links to their website FAQs. The first informing me that the Xbox would not contain any free stuff (so I'm taking that to mean ever) and another giving instructions on how to connect your laptop to your TV using a HDMI cable. I'm guessing that's their idea of a solution.
I didn't mind the £1 thing. They gave a free fiver of credit when you did which means my GF and I can watch a couple of movies we wanted to watch over the Christmas period.

Went on the US dash over the weekend and weirdly theirs is better laid out. Taking Inside Xbox as an example with the UK you get two clusters, which only show the new stuff and you have to sit through the bloody uncontrollable scroll (only bit I genuinely don't like) until you get to the item you want. The US? Click on Inside Xbox and it takes you to about 20 clusters; one for Major's Minute, one for CVG and so on. Each has the last five and a little window for archive (something visibly abscent from ours) and the whole thing is much easier to navigate and find what you want.
I know the US team has a lot more staff but why the big difference?
bamozzy on 13 Feb '12 said:
You can control the scroll (I take it you mean the main box with more than 1 item indicated by 'dots' underneath). If you use the left analogue stick you can skip through the boxes left and right. I don't know if you can do this with 'kinect' though.
I agree it is unfair that we as UK users get a much poorer service. This was also very evident when they released a list of Apps and DATES for US users but couldn't provide one for UK users when the new dashboard was launched. The US version of xbox.com provides more information too. I wold like an 'archive' of the shows you mentioned too and think that ours is very limited.
Does anyone know if and when we are likely to get any more apps? In particular the BBC iPlayer but there was also 2 others mentioned in the coming soon section (along with the awful Crackle) that has now disappeared.
