Syndicate gameplay: 11 minutes with Deus Ex's worst nightmare

EA and Starbreeze release video walkthrough of Syndicate reboot

Still unconvinced about Starbreeze and EA's new Syndicate? This whopping new gameplay video - featuring commentary from executive producer Jeff Gamon - should set you right.

The vid shows the first part of a single player mission, with player character Miles Kilo and a fellow Eurocom agent breaking into the headquarters of the Aspari syndicate. The objective: a computer chip buried in the brain of a rival agent. Yep, this is going to be messy.

On-the-fly hacking is shown, Kilo using his own Dart 6 chip to dismantle drone shields, convert turrets to his cause and telepathically induce bouts of civil war among his enemies. Also in evidence: some sexy guns, with fronds of HUD data sprouting from stocks and breeches, the Dart 6's Overload mode, which sharpens your abilities and allows you to see through walls, and a few first-person cutscenes.

We'll say it again: this probably isn't the reboot fans of the original series are waiting for, but it's one hell of a good-looking shooter. Speaking to OXM in an exclusive interview over the summer, Starbreeze offered a defence of the decision to switch genres, well worth reading.

Syndicate hits Xbox 360 next year. Check out our first look preview. There's another preview in issue 78 of OXM, out now.

  1. That actually looks alright. Don't know anything about syndicate, is it newcomer friendly?

  2. Looked amazing, but I'd love to know if there were multiple methods of carrying out the objective and multiple routes through the building. I've got a bad feeling there aren't.

It looked to me like - press button to hack cop, shoot guards, press button to open vent, watch cutscene, take single path out.

Of course a single playthrough will only show a single route, but if that is the only route, I'm far less interested.

  3. Yeah, they're patently going for a rival to Deus Ex, and having watched that video I think they have one. Looks fantastic, but I agree with Thos that we need a more open-world approach to the gameplay. It's certainly not the Syndicate I remember from my twenties, but if unlike DE it's purely an FPS then I will be very interested in buying it.

  4. Suggesting this is Deus Ex's worst nightmare smacks of cheap journalism. If anything, gamers and developers should praise the success of Deus Ex in re-establishing a niche of sophisticated games with great story and characters, whilst also being incredibly engrossing and fun to play. Syndicate will likely never challenge for the Deus Ex crown, but for anyone looking to enjoy a slice of adult espionage it should be great fun. Even if Syndicate is a competent little brother of Human Revolution I will enjoy it immensely.

More of this sort of thing, please.
