Molyneux: Fable Kinect demo a "horrendous mistake"

Video: Lionhead boss insists 'it's not on rails'

Lionhead boss Peter Molyneux has spent E3 clearing up misguided impressions of his Fable: The Journey demo in the Microsoft keynote, and we've recorded a video to help him explain.

The demo showed how you can steer your horse using Kinect to control the reigns, and create magic using spellcasting gestures. It didn't show any open-world exploration, so everybody assumed it was on rails - something Molyneux is keen to clear up, and has had visiting media attest to.

We'll let the man himself do the talking.

Any questions?

  1. We didn't see your face, so it totally wasn't you.

You can't fool us with your shenanigans!!

  2. It still looks terrible.

  3. Does he ever deliver on anything he says???

  4. Does he ever deliver on anything he says???

Don't know what you're talking about. He delivered on the promise that in Fable1 you could plant a tree and watch it grow (it was one tree, in Fable 2). He delivered the promise that Fable2 would be a new land mark in RPGs accessibility(it was, it was a land mark on the road to 'streamlining' becoming a dirty word and Fable3 becoming one of the biggest disappointments of the generation) and he delivered the promise that Fable3 would feature Kinect (again, we had to wait until the following game) So I firmly believe that Journey isn't on rails...we just might have to wait until Journey 2 for that to be true.

  5. This is the guy that got an OBE ( or whatever it was ) from the queen! The same man who after some journalists make a comment that one of his games looks like it could be on-rails spits out his dummy , starts ranting on about "300 mile journeys" before dragging said journalists one by one into a tiny room to make them sign a white board with "It's not on rails" on it.

Yep he's still a tool , why didn't he get them to sign a board that read "The next Fable will actually be an improvement on the original" or "This time we won't substitute quality gameplay with James Cordon"

    I could go on......

why do you hate him so much. the fable game's are good .

Did he steal your dinner money or something

  7. Woah there Terry , I wouldn't say I hate the guy , even if he did steal my dinner money.

I just find it hard to have any respect for a man who has butchered one of his own beloved franchises with every further iteration while at the same time virtually screaming from the rooftops about how each new Fable will be the greatest game ever made.

If you can honestly tell me that the Fable series has got better with each game then you would be the only person I have ever encountered who thinks so , however I of course respect your opinion.

  8. Gotta love the guys optimism each game has been hyped to death.my favourite has to be when he commented how in F3 your sword would evolve with your character when in fact it just had a new skin each time you levelled up. Though I'll be the 1st Mr Maverick to say I preferred fable 2 over fable 1,not for arguments sake but rather because most of molyneuxs promises were followed through in it. :)

    I think fable 3 is better than 2 .
fable 2 story was worse than 3 the ending in 2 was
the worst and the tower that lasted 10 in game years
the dog should have died from old age as it would have in it's 20's. i would say the fable lc is best then 3 then 2.

You are of course entitled to your opinion the same as any of us but I think you'll find yourself alone on that one. Fable 3 was a shadow of a great franchise. In the bid to make it accessible all challenge had been removed, and it was so easy to make money that all the supposedly tough decisions once you were king were pointless because you could afford anything and the ending was still an anticlimax. I do agree though that LC was the high point of the series but they have gutted it further with each new version.

I really do want the Journey to prove me wrong as I used to love Fable, but I'm not holding much hope.

That ^^ , I can't even bring myself to playthrough Fable 3 , A pal of mine has it and it just depresses me everytime I see/play it. He is of the same opinion.

Don't get me wrong , none of them are awful games , it's just depressing to see them go downhill with each sequel. I loved Fable Lost Chapters and playing through Fable 2 just seemed like a huge backstep , there was no challenge , a handfull of enemies , reduced weapon and armour customisation and MASSIVE plot inconsistencies ( you mentioned the dog as a good example of this ) and the end of Fable 2 is just awful - press X to complete game.

And through it all we have that screaming idiot Peter OBE Telling us that all these limitations and taking away any kind of challenge IS A GOOD THING "We have Jonathon Ross so it's O.k to only have 4 spells" "I'll streamline the game to within an inch of it's life , but thats o.k because we have Stephen Fry , of course , the only way to make damn sure everybody hears all of his dialouge is to make the game completley challenge-less"

Guess thats why I don't really like the guy that much , and he can keep my dinner money.

It was easier to make money in fable 2 in about 3 hours i made about 8 mill and fable 2 was alot easier, and all the people looked the same in the third there were alot more outfits for npc's.
I'm not trying to anoy anyone but fable 2 had more problems than 3 sorry but that's what i feel.

  13. I've spent the last two days trying to explain to my girlfriend why I hate Peter Molyneux so passionately. She's a fan of the Fable series, and doesn't understand why I get so annoyed every year whenever Molyneux is mentioned during E3 coverage.

What I take issue with isn't the quality of Lionhead games as such, although I'm glad to see from these posts I'm not the only one who thinks the Fable series has been removed of all content. Not even (personal favourite) Simon Pegg's inclusion could convince me to like Fable 3. What annoys me about Peter Molyneux is the way he is treated like Ol' Man Gaming by Microsoft - wheeled out every E3 to run his mouth about whatever version of Fable he is cobbling together, or (more recently) Kinect. The man is hype in human form - totally incapable of telling actual game content from fantasy.

It is precisely because Peter Molyneux sings the praises of Kinect that I am so suspicious of its actual effectiveness - a legacy of him constantly telling us his games will have features that never materialise, or - as with Milo & Kate - were never games in the first place. His support for Kinect is (in my eyes at least) partway responsible for the delaying of games like ME3 in order to have unnecessary Kinect functionality included. At what cost to the rest of the experience awaits to be seen...

This video sums the man up entirely. Having to get journalists to sign a whiteboard to prove he's not talking shit for a change is the exact reason I hate him. I despair at Microsoft's continuing worship of the man simply because he is *ALWAYS* plugging f**king Kinect all the time.

He used to be a legend. His once mighty contribution to gaming (Syndicate, Theme Park, Populous) has become nought but an RPG series with less content each itteration, a watering-down and simplification of every decent franchise on the 360 so we can wave our arms at the screen, and a spokesperson whose every word has to be treated with suspicion and mistrust.

TL;DR - f**k you, Peter Molyneux, you arrogant bellend.

Mass effect 3 was probley delayed because of EA making mass effect 2 for the ps 3 at the same time as making mass effect 3 on the 360 and ps3 so blame ea for being greedy , and they probley wanted to release next for year financal reasons

  15. Mass Effect 3 was delayed because of Skyrim. EA knows that releasing in the same window as Skyrim has the potential to bite them in the ass (and wallet!). Even if people prefer Mass Effect, a lot of those people will take Skyrim because a new ES game has been a long wait, it's exciting and fresh, and will want to try it. Delaying ME3 costs them nothing, and ensures them much better sales and revenue. It never works well for 2 similar products to fight for market share. Delaying was the smart move.

Anyway, as for Molinadgers, I used to love him. I used to love his enthusiasm for gaming and for his games. I could forgive his faults, forgive his over promising and under delivering because his enthusiasm was just so infectious. He was like the really cool uncle who was as big a gamer as you are that every gamer would love to have. Then he admitted most of what he says is deliberate bullshit he makes up off the cuff to entertain the gaming journalists and give them something interesting to write about. f**k that. He's deliberately screwing with everybody just to build hype. There is no harm in exaggeratin, I think every developer does it when talking about their game, but Molinadgers just makes shit up that is completely false and has no chance of ever being in the game. The guy is hugely untrustworthy.

3 fable games so far, and the one which still sounds the best is the original. By which I mean all the promises he made for the original sounded the best. What makes me laugh is that it took another generation of gaming and a different studio entirely to make that game. It was called Oblivion. Seriously, if you can, read back on his promises for fable and they basically all add up to what Oblivion ended up being.

  16. I think he's brilliant, he's like the Mourinho of the gaming sector - and miles above most of the other individuals who crawl onto the stage at E3, managing to stutter there way through two lines read from a screen at their feet.

I didn't really like Fable 2, and many of my friends were the same, but at least he puts himself out there and backs new ideas, and stands up and admits when he gets things wrong, and doesn't hide behind Lionhead as a company, but puts his own neck on the line. And that, is more than can be said for a lot of people in the industry. I'm sure his dedication and passion will pay off just like it has in the past - it's easy to level critiscm on the back of a couple of flat games.

  18. There are more MW3 games in the pipe. If that's what you want, go for it.

Skyrim is a pleasant place to play, but I wouldn't want to live there. It presents itself a certain way, and although we have some fantastic experiences in it, as you stay there longer, the fantasy erodes. With fable games, I found the erosion to be slower- it kept you in the world longer, and it felt like it was all connected.

Sure, you could use built-up interest and property ownership to make yourself a bajillionaire - hell, if you wanted to, you could turn on god mode in Bioshock. Thing is, when you take a vehicle of entertainment and willfully skirt the challenge, then complain about it, how fair is that?

I didn't enjoy Fable 3 as much as I did Fable 2, and Fable :LC remains unplayed (I played Fable 1 when it first came out). They have never been about the technical merits, or a sandbox game in terms of freedom of movement. Peter's products have always been about social interaction, and bringing the gamer into the game for REAL - giving you a vested interest.

Look at the kinds of games he's famous for - control and manipulation. It's about being more than hands and feet.

I am not certain I will enjoy Fable: Kinect Edition, or Fable: XBLA Gauntlet Edition. I am certain that I will try them out, because I feel it's important to support the artistry of gaming.

Because I'm tired of all the Modern Warfares.
